CRCL launched the Oyster Shell Recycling Program (OSRP) in 2014 to divert shells from landfills and combat coastal land loss. Partnering with New Orleans-area restaurants and dedicated volunteers, we collect oyster shells to build reefs that protect Louisiana’s eroding coastline. Since the program began, we’ve recycled over 15 million pounds of shell and safeguarded more than 8,000 feet of shoreline.
Every shell is returned to Louisiana waters, contributing to our upcoming reef in Plaquemines Parish. These reefs support local fisheries, reduce shoreline erosion by up to 50%, and help preserve vital cultural heritage sites.
