The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to drive bold, science-based action to rebuild Coastal Louisiana through outreach, restoration and advocacy.
CRCL’s Restoration Program includes the Habitat Restoration Program (HRP), which engages volunteers to participate in vegetation restoration at sites across our coast, and the Oyster Shell Recycling Program (OSRP), which partners with local restaurants to return their discarded oyster shell back into Louisiana’s waters and use them coastal restoration projects. Since its inception in 2000, the HRP has worked with over 12,000 volunteers and restored or enhanced over 4,500 acres of coastal habitat. The OSRP launched in 2014, and has recycled over 2,700 tons of shell, involved over 250 volunteers, and established a half-mile long shoreline protection reef using recycled shell.

The Restoration Program Assistant is an AmeriCorps position and will work directly under the CRCL’s Restoration Programs Director, HRP Coordinator, and OSRP Coordinator to develop wetland restoration projects that will help restore/protect a portion of Louisiana’s coast, engage volunteers in innovative hands-on restoration projects, and engage communities in environmental restoration.

This position is offered to CRCL through the Louisiana Delta Service Corps AmeriCorps program. The member will serve in the CRCL New Orleans office for a six month term of service to begin in March of 2017.

Key Responsibilities:

The Habitat Restoration Program Assistant will:

  • Duties of the Restoration Program Assistant include (but are not limited to):
  • Help plan and implement volunteer-based restoration projects across the coast of Louisiana
  • Prepare and purchase supplies for volunteer events
  • Recruit volunteers and track registration for volunteer events
  • Assist the HRP Coordinator in leading volunteers during events
  • Document volunteer restoration projects by taking pictures
  • Help monitor past restoration projects
  • Maintain all equipment used in restoration projects
  • Assist with volunteer management, recognition, and evaluation
  • Increase the reach of CRCL’s Habitat Restoration Program through the CRCL website and social media outlets
  • Assist staff with other CRCL programs including (but not limited to) the Stewardship Awards Banquet and tabling at festivals
  • Increase the reach of CRCL’s Habitat Restoration Program through the CRCL website and social media outlets.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in an ecological field)
  • Previous work experience in an environmental field and/or volunteer management is preferred
  • An interest in wetland restoration and/or volunteer outreach programs
  • Applicant must be able to grasp basic ecological principles and be able to explain them to others
  • Ability to serve full time for 6 months (900 hours), live on the stipend of $7,100, and utilize a $2,907.50 education award
  • Enthusiastic – must have a desire to play a positive role within the community and have excellent social and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated – the applicant must be comfortable working without constant supervision
  • Willing and able to handle physically demanding work outdoors in a variety of weather and site conditions
  • Comfortable working in an office
  • Good communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Detail orientated and able to manage time appropriately
  • Trailering experience is preferred but not required
What the Habitat Program Assistant AmeriCorps Member Will Receive:
  • $7,100 living allowance (before taxes; dispersed biweekly over 6 months)
