Beach Restoration at Elmer's Island in Grand Isle
|
On August 28th and 29th, the Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana and the Crescent Soil and Water Conservation District, with funding through NOAA’s Community-Based Restoration Program planted approximately 5,000 pots of marsh hay cordgrass and bitter panicum along the shoreline of Elmer’s Island in Grand Isle.
More than 40 volunteers worked over two days to help rebuild this shoreline which provides essential protection for our inland communities and wetlands, serving as our first line of defense. The new vegetation will assist in stabilizing and capturing sand to build dunes. In addition, the project will also create wildlife habitat, increase species diversity and provide a seed source for natural regeneration.
This project was made possible through a partnership with NOAA’s Community-based Restoration Program, Restore America's Estuaries, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Crescent Soil and Water Conservation District, Louisiana Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry and the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. In addition to our partners, we received a very generous in-kind donation provided by Rodney and Bonnie Messer.
