New Series Focuses Attention on Local Restoration

A major tenet of CRCL’s mission is outreach to communities most affected by coastal land loss. We try to accomplish this through many different avenues, but this year we tried something a bit different called our Coastal Restoration Road Show. This was a series of events held in four communities across Coastal Louisiana who are feeling the effects of our disappearing coast in different ways.

We planned the Road Show series to bring a high level, but very local, view of coastal restoration and flood risk reduction to communities who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn directly from the experts about what their area is facing when it comes to land loss and what plans are in place to tackle this catastrophe.

We began in Abbeville, then went to Lafitte and Cameron and wrapped up in Lacombe. Each event began with a field trip where residents of the area toured restoration projects that had already been constructed and areas where projects were planned. Each field trip was led by a coastal expert who pointed out and explained unique features of the marsh and need for restoration in the area. Then the main event kicked off with dinner, presentations by CRCL Outreach Director, Corey Miller, and CRCL Science Director, Dr. Giovanna McClenachan, followed by small group discussions and then a panel of experts answering questions about plans and projects specific to the area.

In all, nearly 300 people attended across the state and many more hundreds watched on Facebook. We want to thank the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, US Army Corps of Engineers, Louisiana Office of Community Development, US Fish and Wildlife Service and local floodplain and coastal officials in Vermilion, Cameron, St. Tammany and Jefferson parishes for participating in our Coastal Restoration Road Show series. We also say a very special thank you to our presenting sponsor, Entergy and our other partners AECOM and Restore the Mississippi River Delta.
